Myriad Colors Phantom World, Episode 1

That’s right, another new segment thingy! Week after week I will be reviewing (kinda) each episode of Myriad Colors Phantom World. The show simulcasts every Wednesday, so I will try to get my review out as soon as possible. Today’s Friday though, so I kinda dropped the ball on that one. Perhaps we can call this Myriad Colors Thursdays, but I’ll post on Wednesday nights if I have the time. Sound good? Okay.

phantom world 1

Heheheh…I like this show. The characters are cute, the animation is top notch, the fanservice is…well, it’s fanservice. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

In fact, I actually find the fanservice in the show really comical and self-aware. The show obviously know the tropes it’s treading on, and instead of falling down that slippery slope, it brings something unique and funny to the table. I’m not really getting aroused by any of this, but it doesn’t fail to put a smile on my face.

phantom world 2

Speaking of smiling, the incredibly gorgeous scenery and animation left me grinning from ear to ear. Seriously, this is a fucking beautiful show, without a single moment lacking visual appeal (and not just because of boobs). But I’d expect nothing less from KyoAni.

Now onto the actual plot/story/whatever, I must say that this episode felt a little heavy on the exposition. Not enough to leave a bad taste, but still noticeable enough to take me out of the experience. The main character spouts most of the exposition, in attempts to give us more of a feel and understanding of the world they live in. But even after all that, I only have a basic understanding of what’s going, and I don’t quite get how they’re powers work. Oh well.

Also, Izumi Reina…kawaii as fuck. And voiced by Saori Hayami! Definitely waifu material.

Pros/Cons

+ Fanservice…I’ll allow it

+ Very pretty visuals

+ Izumi Reina

– A little too much exposition?

– “Magic”

Why I Dropped These Shitty Anime

Welcome to the birth of my newest segment, Why I Dropped (insert anime here). You see, I don’t typically drop anime, and before this I never did. But every once and while there are anime that test my patience. Sure, I could just power through it out of spite, but really, that’s just a waste of my time. So instead, I decided that every time I dropped an anime from My Anime List (check it out, it’s kawaii as fuck), I’d at least give a reason why.

So here are five anime that I could just not fucking deal with anymore. Enjoy.

Oh, and if you do like any of these anime, feel free to tell me your opinions in the comments below. Perhaps you’ll persuade me to give something another chance.

Beautiful Bones –Sakurako’s Investigation-

sakurako crap-san.PNG

Episodes seen: 9/12

To me this just felt like a really lazy mystery show. The main character, Sakurako, is just a lady who’s really into bones for some reason. The rest of the cast look up to her as some sort of master-class analyst, but really she just has somewhat above average observation skills and a wealth of totally random knowledge that always finds a way to be relevant. Most of the time it’s loosely related to bones. Also, she’s not a cop, a detective, or a private inspector. She’s just some fucking chick that everyone relies on when there’s a mystery to be solved.

And they’re not even good mysteries. There’s like one homicide, and it’s just a crazy husband or something. I can’t even be bothered to fact check because this show is just so god damn boring. Most of them aren’t even criminal cases, or at least they don’t start that way. It’s just random crap and I can’t fucking deal with it anymore.

I can’t fucking deal with it anymore. Hmm, maybe that should be my new catchphrase.

Oh, and one more thing. The show keeps clumsily hinting at a backstory between the main two characters, and they do so with brief hallucinations of some child characters we know nothing about, and continue to know nothing about until who knows when. I mean, it’s not like I watched nine whole episodes or anything.

Glasslip

Episodes seen: 8/13

I was really, really bored with this one. The characters were really dull. The plot was really uninteresting. And they have really big eyes. Like, these were way too fucking big or something, because I could not get past them.

This show was about chickens and looking into glass to see the future or something. Then a boy shows up for no fucking reason and the girl falls in love with him maybe? I really don’t know what’s fucking going on in this show, and it doesn’t present itself well enough for me to care.

Rail Wars!

rail wars

Episodes seen: 6/12

Talk about a show that’s so heinously terrible, it’s funny. Except, it’s not funny when you realize you could be doing LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE with this time.

It’s plot denies all logic. Like, these kids are just security guards IN TRAINING. Yet they’re forced to take on terrorists and defuse bombs and all sorts of crazy bullshit that makes no sense. Furthermore, the animation is noticeably bad and lacks consistency of any kind. There’s very little talking animations, weirdly shiny pantyhose, and unfinished pieces in the background that I would go back to screen cap for you, except I don’t want to waste any more of my time on this shit pile of a show.

Don’t watch this show. There’s plenty of better train shows out there, and much more tantalizing and well written ecchis, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Actually, I Am

Actually, this sucked

Episodes seen: 5/13

Actually, I’m not. Sorry, I just had to make that joke. Now, this show wasn’t horrible, but I’ve definitely seen enough. It just seemed like an incredibly generic harem. Also, the characters look weird to me, but I won’t knock it for art style.

To get more into it, the main character of this show is notoriously easy to read, yet somehow he finds himself having to keep the secret of the girl he likes, the secret being that she’s a vampire. There’s also an alien chick and a paparazzi girl and…

Whatever.

AntiMagic Academy 35th Test Platoon

35th platoon

Episodes seen: 1/12

One episode. Well, that was fast. I know I should give it more of a chance, but it committed two of my cardinal sins right off the bat. Exposition spouting and the oh-so-cliché accidental boob grab.

And it wasn’t even just because it was a boob grab. It’s because it was the most generic, empty, pointless boob grab I have ever seen. He literally trips over nothing (okay, he actually does trip over some, but come on), then squeezes her boobs for good few seconds. He notices it’s her boob and still doesn’t let go. Then he says he’s more into flat chests. She beats him. Oh, what wacky fun these two are having.

So, uh, I’m done with that.

Most Anticipated Anime of 2016

First, the sequels:

Kizumonogatari

h0Yrzhd

If you know me, you knew this would be here. Holy shit am I excited. There’s even going to be theater showings in the United States. I even bought the book.

Reasons I’m excited: It’s monogatari and it’s SHAFT

GATE Season 2

maxresdefault

I was very pleasantly surprised by GATE last summer. It looked good, sounded good, felt good. I like the characters and enjoyed my time with them, and now I feel like going back for more. All hail Rory Mercury-sama, our true lord and savior.

Durarara x2 Ketsu

drrr

I’m a big fan of the Durarara series, and I can’t wait to see how this season wraps up. They added a lot of interesting new characters and gave intriguing changes to the old ones. I just hope it they can wrap up all these loose threads into a satisfying little bow.

New Things:

Okay, before I go into anything about the “new things”, let me preface that by saying I am going off of very limited criteria. Basically, knowledge of the studio and PVs. So don’t expect anything intelligent or insightful from this. Just like the rest of my blog.

Musaigen no Phantom World

phantom world

That chick has some nice sweater cows. KyoAni has made some great things, like Beyond the Boundary and Chuunibyo. I really liked Beyond the Boundary. Also, sweater cows.

Boku Dake ga Inai Machi

inai machi

Looks…interesting, I guess. A-1 Pictures has been hit and miss with me in the past, and just like any other anime I hope this one is a homerun.

Dagashi Kashi

dagashi kashi

Looks…funny. Problem is, it also looks like FUNimation has the streaming rights. I have nothing against FUNimation, but I typically stick to Crunchyroll out of sheer convenience. Also, the studio that’s making it, Feel, did Oregairu 2. I really liked Oregairu 2. So I might just give this one a chance.

Nijiro Days

nijiro days

Comedy. Shoujo. Slice of life. Sounds good to me. Also, Production Reed did Squid Girl. So, uh…yeah.

The Maybe Pile:

Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu

I know nothing of Project No.9 and have seen none of their work. This is basically a shot in the dark. Hope it hits.

Prince of Stride: Alternative

I don’t typically watch sports anime, but Madhouse has a really great portfolio. So I might just give this one a try.

Favorite Anime of 2015

Oregairu 2

hiki 2

Also known as My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO, but I don’t typically refer to it by that mouthful of a title. Still, what an excellent show, my absolute favorite of the spring season. I was already a huge fan of the first season, and now it’s come back with even more beautiful visuals and music. What’s even better is that the characters relationships are starting to go somewhere. With great writing and lines that melted my heart, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this week after week. Can’t wait for season 3!

Working!!!

working!!!2

Speaking of 3rd seasons, Working!!! came to an end last year, and by god was it a blast. That shows humor seriously knows no bounds, and never ceased to make me smile. Thankfully, it ended (as good things always do), and in a way that left me completely satisfied. The proper characters were thoroughly shipped, the restaurant still lives on, and Yamada is still cute as ever.

Punchline

punchline

Holy shit, I did not see this one coming. For a while this show really had me going. It made a bunch of weird rules for itself and the story progressed through the confines of those rules. It was an interesting way to tell a story, and was full of comical and action-packed moments that kept me entertained throughout. Even the “fanservice” was done in a fun way that was integral to the actual plot. It was not boring or contrived, but intriguing and fresh, not to mention visually stunning. Punchline told a very nice story and wrapped it up in 12 episodes. Needless to say, it impressed me.

Owarimonogatari

brilliant

It’s SHAFT, so it’s fucking great. Not just normal great. FUCKING GREAT. THIS SHOW WAS FUCKING GREAT. Also, it really offered up some great lines for fans of the series.

Honorable Mentions:

Himouto! Umaru-chan

1e9779723401a29d9a3dd859d41f2ab0

This one was just a good time. Himouto! Umaru-chan had a nice cast of characters and plenty of GIF worthy moments. Also, really good merchandising potential. Plus, it was fun to watch.

Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend

This one really took me by surprise. The episode 0 OVA did not do it justice, as it was something worth watching after you had gotten to know the characters, not before. That being said, the characters are great and self-aware of the particular tropes they play. And I just really like otaku characters in anime.

GATE

Speaking of otaku characters in anime (damn, I am on a roll with these segways), GATE. (Okay, not so good on the follow up) GATE was fun, and I’d love to see more.

Gourmet Girl Graffiti

Also SHAFT, and also awesome. Just not “monogatari” awesome. Still, really cute show about friendship and food and eating ice cream in a bath for some reason. Don’t question it, just enjoy.

Oh, and best OP and ED both go to Punchline. Really excellent stuff.

working!!!

Anime, Gaming, and My Personal 2016 New Year Resolutions

sakurasouAnime Resolutions

Watch more of it. Done.

Actually, that’s something easier said than done. I have to find the time for it/work hard to make time for it. Because it is important. To you (my oh so cherished reader), to my blog, and most importantly, to me. Anime is like half my fucking life, and I’m okay with that.

So here’s to watching anime.

And not only that, but writing about anime too. I want to write more reviews and Anime Quick Thoughts (trademark pending), and also a new thing I’ll be unveiling soon. (So stay tuned…except this is a blog, not a T.V. station, but…you know what I mean.)

Gaming Resolutions

I know I don’t write about gaming as often as I do anime, but it’s still an important part of who I am. So of course, I’m going to play and write about video games. And perhaps even do some of these newfangled “Let’s Plays” and “Twitch Streams” that are so popular with the kids. But before any of that, I’m going to make this promise, THAT I AM 100% POSITELY GOING TO REGRET BUT FUCK IT.

I promise to ‘platinum’ Fallout 4 within the year 2016, and if I fail to do so, I will record a video of myself getting a snowball thrown at my junk, which I will then upload onto YouTube for your enjoyment.

Personal Resolutions

I want to hit the gym. You see, there’s a gym that comes with tuition at my college, and I did not utilize it at all last semester. So I’m going to this year, because I want to look like this:

hot araragi 2

Yeah.

Another personal resolution of mine is to FUCKING PUBLISH SOMETHING. I need to get published work out there if I’m going to do this professionally (writing, that is). Now, that’s not to say that I’m just going to shit things out for the hell of it. I am going to put hard work into everything I create, don’t you worry. It’s just, I need something out there, you know?

So I’m hoping to bring at least two of my “creative projects” to fruition this year, one of which should be out by next month (hopefully).

My final resolution is to just better myself all around. To be a better writer. To be a better drawer. To be a better musician. To be a better creator. To be the very best, like no one ever was. Okay, maybe I’m getting a little carried away here. The point is, I want to get better.

So here’s to 2016. Hopefully we can all get a little bit better.
