March Comes in Like a Lion S2, Episode 10

Never in my life have I ever needed an episode recap before. Quite frankly, it’s one of the biggest reasons I’ve held the shounen genre in contempt for so many years. Episode recaps are most often nothing but a time-filler, masquerading as a service for those with weak memories, or for people like me, whom jump back into series after prolonged hiatus. More likely than not though, what you left off on will most likely come back to you anyway, so long as what happened was at all worthy of being remembered—at least, that had always been the case for me, which is why I’ve come to deem recaps as near-intolerable wastes of time. That all being said…I kinda appreciate the recap this episode of March Comes in… gave me. Continue reading

The Greatest Political Anime of Our Generation

Screenshot (1839)

I recently had the pleasure of finishing the masterpiece known as Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist. As of now, it ranks among the highly esteemed list that is “Crispy’s All-Time Favorite Anime”—a very exclusive list, I assure you. Of course, there are many reasons why I think so highly of it. One of those reasons…I just love dirty jokes, and I would do anything to live in a world where it is okay to indulge in them. My second reason for loving this show, however, is what spawned this post—because never, in all my history of anime-watching, have I seen an anime handle politics so perfectly. Continue reading

DDLC and the 4th Wall Between Mediums

Once again, I’m late to the party—a damn good party at that. Doki Doki Literature Club has been setting the world ablaze for almost half a year, but only now have I come to understand why. The game is mind-blowing, and one of the truest testaments I’ve ever seen as to why games are so far beyond all other storytelling mediums. Before I get into why that is, however, I must give an obligatory SPOILER WARNING. Though admittedly, I don’t believe I’m spoiling this game in the traditional sense—by divulging plot details and narrative twists—I do think knowing as little about this game as possible before going in will result in the best possible experience you can afford yourself. From what the internet tells me, the game’s length is about 5 hours. It’s also free on Steam, so absolutely play through it if for some reason you’re even later to the party than I am. Tokyo Story: The True Essence of Japanese Domesticity

Tokyo_Story_large_1-1494436292-726x388

[Preface: Here’s another essay I wrote, this time for an art history class. I know I typically only write about anime and the occasional video game here, but I figured this might make for an interesting read considering Tokyo Monogatari is widely considered a masterwork in film, taught in any intro film class worth its salt. It is also Japanese, which almost makes it anime! Perhaps give it a chance!] Continue reading

Perfect Blue and Losing Our Perfect Self

Screenshot (1824).png

[Preface – I’m back! Summer break is finally here, and after a particularly soul-crushing semester in academia, I’m ready to get back to working on things I actually enjoy doing: Drawing, biking, watching anime, and most importantly, writing this blog! To kick off my surely long-awaited return, I’m sharing my final paper from a film class, one that I’ve actually added to and touched up quite a bit since turning in because I apparently care more about what my readers think than my professor…to whom I’m sorry if you end up reading this. You’re cool, I swear! I just was lazy and didn’t give the proper time and effort for the graded paper that I did for my anime blog! Um…anyway, I will give a SPOILER WARNING for all of you that have not seen Perfect Blue. Go watch it. It’s amazing. If you don’t believe me, go watch it, then come back and tell me all the reasons why I’m wrong. Oh, also, I only used KissAnime for screenshots because I couldn’t do it on my own personal DVD. It was for educational purposes! And I’m a Crunchyroll Premium member!] Continue reading

March Comes in Like a Lion S2, Episode 8 & 9

Screenshot (1796)

I’m very much enjoying how connected this entire cast continues to become. Nikkaidou’s already met Rei’s “family”. So has Kyouko. And now Rei’s teacher is being thrown into the mix as he reacts furiously to news of Hinata’s predicament. His rage is offset by the show’s usual brand of comedic relief—whenever things get serious, the show becomes quite cartoony and overdone. And whenever things get REALLY serious, the show stops underplaying itself to ensure the deeper, somber moments REALLY strike chords in the audience. Continue reading

Con Experience: Anime Milwaukee (AMKE) 2018

IMG_20180217_213529967

So, it’s been a while since my last post because I was at and preparing for Anime Milwaukee 2018. Though I don’t typically do this, I’ve decided I’m going to dedicate a post to sharing a bit about my real-life experiences, rather than the usual anime analysis or slightly erotic fan fic. [By the way, did you see that Danmachi announced its second season! I couldn’t be less excited!] Last weekend was my second time ever at an anime convention, and I’ve taken away from it far more than I had from my first. It’s been on my mind all week, while I desperately completed a handful of assignments at the last minute because I had neglected them to go to anime raves and play rhythm games instead—and so now, I think, is the time for me to elaborate on my new understanding and appreciation of panel hosting and cosplaying, as well as just the great time I had being among hordes of fellow anime nerds for three days straight. Sex, Symbolism, and the FranXX

Screenshot (1745)

A lot of people are going cringe at, disregard, and dare I say, “criticize” Darling in the FranXX for entirely obvious reasons. Its bombastic symbolism is going to do more than roll eyes for jaded audiences because of its excessive nature. Like a cartoonish-ly oversized boxing glove with the letters “S-E-X” printed on the cushion over the knuckles, this tremendous left hook is certain to land a direct blow to anyone watching—but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. March Comes in Like a Lion S2, Episodes 6 & 7

Screenshot (1719).png

There has been a lot of themes and issues addressed in March Comes in Like a Lion, from these past few episodes alone…and I’m not certain how I feel about it, to be honest. It’s been a bit of a hard turn, really, as we delve into the realm of bullying after an entire season of merely shogi, making friends, and hinting at Rei’s troubled familial past. To turn to the problems of schoolyard hierarchy and mentality, after all that season one was about, has me worried this is more of a side story rather than a pivotal point in Rei’s growth. Continue reading
